Purpose statement
Operation Smile Australia is a children's medical charity dedicated to providing safe, effective and timely healthcare to children and young adults in developing nations. Our focus is on the craniofacial area and we typically treat conditions such as cleft lip and cleft palate, encephalocele, complex facial clefts and tumours. Our volunteer medical professionals also provide training and support to local doctors and nurses to help build sustainability in the countries we work in. In providing excellent healthcare and training for medical professionals in low income countries this we are meeting the challenge set by the United Nations in it's 17 Sustainable Development Goals - https://www.who.int/health-topics/sustainable-development-goals#tab=tab_3 . The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all". The SDGs were conceived in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly (UN-GA) and are intended to be achieved by the year 2030. Operation Smile Australia is committed in contributing towards the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda. Grounded in 23 years of experience delivering healthcare to children in low income environments, Operation Smile Australia enables it's partners in these countries to build the capacity of vulnerable health systems and empower local medical champions to reduce barriers to care in their communities. As well as working with our partner countries OSA also brings children to Australia with complex medical conditions to receive surgery than cannot be performed in their home country. These surgeries are carried out at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane.
